Work life balance

Heads up: This post is over 3 years old. People, opinions, and industries change — some of this may be outdated.

I've worked remotely since 2011, and have spoken / advocated for "work life balance" ever since. Remote was a big mindset shift for me in the beginning. At this point I don't think I love the actual term.

As I was drafting this, Tighten released an episode of Twenty Percent Time and I highly suggest giving it a listen.

A couple of things that have also helped me the last 2 years.

1) Ask yourself what you want to change now, and what your ideal balance is.

This inherently gives you a goal roadmap. Also making it easier to visualize your next steps in additions to communicating your needs.

2) Find someone who truly models the work-life balance you're working towards.

Making notes of things such as:

  • Boundaries set, professionally and personally
  • Routines kept to maintain said balance
  • How the balance is maintained in actuality; life happens.

Keep them close and ask questions, as they now part of your support in your efforts.
